I've been seeing some essays from some authors whose tried to refute the syncretism of Apollo with Helios/Sol and Artemis/Diana with Selene/Luna, one of those even called syncretism a "decadent" practice… I mean, i know that them as sun and moon deities wasn't their primal role and wasn't very common or popular in religion nor mythology being Roman or Greek (in fact, in mostly of textes and cults Helios/Sol and Selene/Luna were always viewed as th Sun and the Moon), but i think that said that Apollo an Artemis/Diana were never viewed as sun and moon deities or claimed that was just a misconception and a modern misinformation is not true, because we have textes in which we could see associations of the Sun and the Moon with Apollo and Artemis/Diana.
Personally i like to see them more in a "sunlight and moonlight", and well of course focus in other of their more main and primarly roles, not as the sun and the moon, those are Helios and Selene. But i don't like when people bothers others who sees twins as sun and moon deities arguing that is wrong, or a misconception. I could quote some ancient authors whose associated them with solar and lunar aspects, but, as those essays claims, they would said that are misinformation or a "not-reliable" text source 😮💨
yeah, it's very true that though they were not THE sun and moon gods, they were still heavily associated with it!
even in Greece, in Artemis's case at least, she was worshipped in a triple cult alongside Selene and Hecate. As for Apollo, while "light" can refer to multiple things, such as in relation to prophecy, I genuinely think it also refers to his connection to the sunlight.
he has been describe as. you know. glowing before. and not for any particular purpose either. not much of a stretch for that to apply to being the literal god of light.
and I totally agree with you anon! i see them as the light of the sun and moon too!
i think there's may be a bit too much emphasis on "getting the myths right!" when it comes to the differences between Greece and Rome - I'm on board with people finally understanding what relates to which, but there must also be an understanding that lots of times, they intersected. Apollo and Diana likely became popularized as the sun and moon because they were just more relevant to the Romans' lives, with Apollo even becoming an important figurehead in the cult of Sol Invictus - even then, he was worshipped WITH Helios and Sol.
There is never just one specific god for one specific thing, and to minimize each gods' importance based solely on "oh that's ANOTHER god" downplays their individuality.
Like for example, I could just say "APOLLO is the god of the arts, NOT the Muses!!" and I would technically be correct, but also be missing MASSIVE CONTEXT because Apollo is the patron and god of the arts, but the Muses are the patrons and goddess of SPECIFIC arts.
"EILEITHYIA is the goddess of childbirth, NOT Artemis!" also technically correct, BUT Artemis is the patron of childbirth and midwifery BECAUSE of her function as a protector of the young, and also because of the rough birthing her own mother went through where in one version, she helped deliver Apollo - another connection to her patronage of childbirth.
Hyperion, Helios, and Apollo all serve different functions of the sun (such as its physical manifestation, path, and light), just as Selene, Hecate, and Artemis serve different functions of the moon (such as the different phases)!
if anyone has anything to add on about Apollo and Artemis and their connections to the sun and moon, and especially in relation with the other gods, feel free to add on!!

Khaos and Nyx
Clio, muse of history, guide my thoughts and fingers to pull forth from Hades the account of what has been.
Reader, know this: it is night in the universe. On the hottest day of summer, at the highest noon, under the brightest sun—it is cold, black night in the universe.
Apollo seems to own half the sky, but he is no match for Nyx. We are children of Gaia, and Gaia favors Apollo. She clings to his rays and drapes them tightly over Ouranos, stretching their fibers as far as they can stretch, but beyond the embrace of Gaia, there is Nyx, and Nyx, and Nyx.
Nyx floods the beyond. She extends past our knowledge and comprehension. She extends to the furthest reaches of space, and she extends to the furthest reaches of time.
And where Nyx ends, Khaos begins.
Khaos, the unknowable. Khaos, the formless. Khaos, the unreachable, even to Hyperion.
You see, Khaos is antithetical to the minds of humankind. Humans are observers, and Khaos is the unobservable. Humans are predictors, and Khaos is the unpredictable. Humans are the meaning-givers, and Khaos is the devourer of meaning.
Lastly, humans are limited, and everywhere outside the bounds of the human sphere, there is the antihuman: Khaos. Look far enough away, and you will stop seeing. Khaos. Look far enough into the past, and the past disappears. Khaos. Look far enough into the future, and the future does the same. Khaos.
But therein lies the miracle: where we now stand, once there too was Khaos. Because the nature of Khaos is equality of all possible outcomes, it is inevitable that they must at times give way to order. They must allow the occasional pocket of sensibility to emerge within them, or else they are not truly capricious. We exist in such a pocket.
It opened 14 billion years ago, though years did not exist, and from the vacuum that receding Khaos left, Nyx was born—Nyx of ebony complexion, and silent authority. She was not born alone, but hand in hand with Chronos—Chronos of Ivory flesh, and implacable stubbornness. Together, from the strands of Khaos strewn about this bubble of the knowable, they wove a new story. They wove the filaments, the galaxies, and the stars, upon which the story of humanity would play out.
This is the beginning of the story; the first thing that can be known: that before this, all is unknowable; that after, all is the doing of Nyx and Chronos; and that one day, Khaos will reclaim what was always theirs.

Themis
Themis is the personification and goddess of divine law, will, and justice in Greek mythology. She was held in high esteem by the Olympians, often sitting by Zeus' throne and giving him wise counsel. Themis held the place of Oracle at Delphi before passing on her prophetic powers to Apollo. Common epithets of Themis include Gaia Themis ('Earth' and 'Right').
Themis was the daughter of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaia (Earth) and the second wife of Zeus. She is often depicted with the sword of justice and scales, symbolising the law and judgement she gives.
Birth & Family
In Hesiod's (c. 700 BCE) Theogony, Themis is the daughter of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Heaven). She is the sister of Oceanus, Rhea, and Cronus.
And then she lay with Heaven, and bore Deep-whirling Oceanus and Koios; then Kreius, Iapetos, Hyperion, Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Lovely Tethys, and Phoebe, golden-crowned.
(Theogony, 136-140)
Themis became Zeus' second wife (although some sources say she was his first). Her children with Zeus represented the visible order of the world. They included the Horae (the Seasons), Eirene (Peace), Dike (Justice) and the three Fates (Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos). In some sources, such as Aeschylus' (c. 525 to c. 456 BCE) tragedy Prometheus Bound, Themis is listed as being Prometheus' mother, although he is more commonly known as being the son of Iapetus and Clymene or Asia.

@writing-nothing-but-spilled-ink inspired me! I’m gonna make a post about who would be the Batfams godly parents if they were the Percy Jackson universe. (With minimal explanation and mostly based off of fanon content and my limited canon knowledge)
starting with Bruce: Athena. I think his intellect and strategy had to come from somewhere, and Athena is the goddess of strategic war. I could also see Themus, goddess of law and order, or Dike, the goddess of Justice.
Babs: Phoebe. Also referred to as the Oracle of Delphi, she sees all and knows all.
Dick: Harmonia. He is always trying to keep the peace with everyone and make them happy together it seems.
Cass: Eirene, the goddess of Peace. Also really good at keeping the peace and bringing people together.
Jason: Apollo. He is a reader and a writer, I would not put it past him to be a theater kid too. Do you see how dramatic he is?
Steph: Hermes. Child of mischief and she is witty. I could see an argument for Dionysus too.
Tim: I think Athena as well. If anyone can go head to head with Bruce’s intellect, I would say it would be Tim. Ironically I could see Hypnos or Charon and their relationship with dreams and sleep.
Duke: Apollo or Hyperion. Mostly with his powers of Light, but I could also see him being a son of Erebos because of their manipulation of the Darkness, or Nyx and her powers of the Night.
Damian: at first I would think Ares because of his arrogance and entitlement. But with his love of conservation and animals and nature I could also see him being a child of Demeter.
Alfred: even as a maiden goddess, I agree that Hestia would be Alfred’s godly parent. But I could also see a case for Ares as a wild card. He is fiercely protective of those he loves, and so is Ares. Also as a field medic for the army he could be a child of Asclepius.
some of these might be really off so I apologize! Feel free to share your thoughts as well:)

🌞 Happy Equinox! 🌞 There is a lot to celebrate today! On top of the equinox, there is the Thelemic new year, time the Supreme Ritual, and the Equinox of the Gods to celebrate! I always recognize the equinoxes by drawing oracles and having some celebratory food. I hope everyone has a beautiful day. Here is the Orphic Hymn to Helios that may be a nice thing to incorporate into your day to celebrate the sun.
Orphic Hymn to Helios Anonymous (ca. 200 CE), translated by B. Nolan Note: Here Helios is equated with his father Hyperion, "the high one."
Hear me, blessed one, all-seeing, eternal eye, glittering golden Titan, Hyperion, ceaseless heavenly light, you who are sweetness to all living creatures! To the right you bring forth morning, on your left night. King of seasons, driving steeds with sounding hooves, you race, powerful, all fire and brightness, through your endless heavenly course. Enemy of the vicious, you lead the pious to good, maintaining, with your golden lyre, the harmony of the world. You inspire good deeds, lord, as you lead the cosmos playing your pipes, circling around in your fiery course, shedding shimmering light, life-giving, ever-young. ever-clear King of Time. Eternal Zeus, bright light encompassing the world, you see all at both sunset and sunrise. O summit of justice, water-loving lord, safeguard of every oath, most powerful of protectors, eye of justice, life-light, great charioteer, your crackling whip goads on your fiery team of horses. Hear me, I beg you, and grant a sweet and pious life to your followers.

Part 4 of my Greek family tree thing. I took a break from it because it was getting kind of dull and it required a lot of wikipedia searching. But I've come back for part 4. The least I can do is discuss the first 12 Titans briefly. So here we go (note: this took me nearly two hours to write):
Gaia and Ouranos had lots of children (including the Cyclopses and the hundred-handed ones) but their most famous children were the 12 Titans. Six male, six female. In order from oldest to youngest (well, with Oceanus as eldest and Kronos as the youngest. I don't know the others) they were:
Oceanus: Oceanus seems like the most gentle of all of Gaia and Ouranos's sons. Being the oldest, perhaps Oceanus had a maturity the others didn't. Oceanus didn't participate in the attack on his father (he was the only one of the six male titans who didn't participate in the attack), and he also didn't any sides during the first titan war. Perhaps this is why there's no indication Oceanus was punished in any significant way. Unlike his brothers, I'm assuming he got amnesty for staying neutral.
Tethys: Tethys would end up as Oceanus's wife. They were both Titans of the water. According to her wikipedia page, Tethys nursed Helios and Selene for her sister Theia. Her and Oceanus may have also raised Hera while Zeus was fighting Kronos. Wikipedia mentioned something about that.
Hyperion: Titan of Light, he is responsible for most of the gods that represent the cosmos. Him and his wife Theia had three kids: Helios (the Sun), Selene (the Moon) and Eos (the Dawn). Also, Hyperion was guardian of one of the pillars that held up the sky. Him, Crius, Coius and Iapetus were the four Titans in charge of holding up the sky. Hyperion got the Eastern Pillar, making him Titan of the East.
Theia: The Titan in control of sight and vision. Theia is responsible for making precious metals like gold and silver shine the way they do. She made them precious, I suppose you could say. Her and Hyperion were clearly a good pair. Light and Vision, two things very commonly associated with each other.
Coeus: Coeus is the forgotten titan. He's almost never mentioned in the Pjo books, his wikipedia page is much smaller than his brothers, Coeus is clearly very forgettable. Maybe it's because he was one of the middle kids in the titan family. Coeus was also the guardian of the Northern Pillar of the sky, making him Titan of the North. He may have also been the Titan of Knowledge. Apollo, Artemis and Hecate are his grandkids.
Phoebe: Wife of Coeus, Phoebe is also associated with Prophecy. Before her grandson Apollo, Phoebe was the guardian of the Oracle of Delphi. She gave it away to her grandson on one of his birthdays, the same way her sister Themis had given it to her years ago.
Crius/Krios: Titan of the Stars, one of his names (Krios specifically) was supposedly also the Greek word for Ram. Crius is another one that's easily forgotten, but at least he was briefly seem in the Pjo series (that's more than what Coeus got). Crius is also the Titan of the South, holding up the southern pillar of the sky.
Mnemosyne: Titan of memory, Mnemosyne stayed neutral in the Titan war (or fought for the Olympians). We know this because Mnemosyne is also the mother of the nine muses, who were born from Mnemosyne and Zeus.
Iapetus: Titan of Mortality and Craftsmanship, Iapetus was the Titan of the West. He may be seen as humanity's oldest ancestor. To the point where his four children (prometheus, epimetheus, atlas and menoetius) were seen as embodying some of humanity's worst aspects.
Themis: Titan of Justice and Law. Themis would go on to marry Zeus and become his second wife. Fun fact: Themis is still referenced a lot today. Whenever we refer to lady justice, we're probably talking about Themis.
Rhea: Mother of the gods, Rhea plays an important role in the history of Olympus. Also, let's be honest. Rhea probably had an awful life with a husband like Kronos.
Kronos: The youngest of the Titans, Kronos was also the worst of the lot. Kronos was probably the Titan/God of time (unless you think him and Chronos are two different people). Kronos may have also been the god of the harvest. But honestly, he'll always be known for castrating his father and trying to eat his children. Oh, and probably being an abusive husband with that track record.

4 of Pentacles. Mystic Spiral Tarot

Themes and Keywords: Status and structure. Stabilizing the practical. Stagnation via solid position. The vault, the fortress, the bunker, the throne. Authority and responsibility, law and order. The CEO. Monarchs and plutocrats. Accumulating wealth. Avarice, covetousness, gluttony. Astrology/Element The last Capricorn decan networks the three planetary heavyweights: Saturn ruling the sign, the Sun ruling the decan, and Jupiter as sovereign of fours. Combined in the suit of Pentacles, these three icons of patriarchal supremacy confer a lot of clout: earthly power, one of Capricorn’s worldly ambitions. There is great potential here for status and benevolent authority. But it is said that “absolute power corrupts absolutely.” History is riddled with monarchs and moguls whose avarice know no bounds. Rulers declare themselves emperors, emperors declare themselves gods, and plutocrats pursue ever more obscene levels of wealth with single-purpose. Mythology/Time of Year The Jupiter-Saturn-Sun combination of masculine gods is potent. The Oracle of Apollo claimed Zeus, Hades, and Helios-Dionysus (or sometimes Serapis) were “three gods in one godhead.” 196 The Graeco-Egyptian solar god Serapis combined attributes of Zeus, Hades, Dionysus, and Osiris. His worship was introduced to unite the Greek and Egyptian subjects of Hellenistic times and to consolidate the power of the Ptolemaic dynasty. Powerful gods are often hailed as the all-seeing eye, like the one seen on the US dollar. We’ve mentioned Capricorn as devilish Enki, Lord of the Sacred Eye. Gods of Saturn, Sun, and Jupiter are all-powerful deities in some manner, and many have been associated with or referred to as “eyes.” 197 In the Orphic hymns, Sol is called Hyperion, immortal Zeus, and cosmic eye. Apollo/Helios was called the eye of Zeus. Power combined with greed and arrogance is illustrated by stories of King Midas, follower of Pan. The king’s avarice resulted in his infamous golden touch “gift” from Dionysus, and his hubris led to being cursed with the ears of an ass by Apollo. Susan T. Chang

the titan gods
there were 12 major titan gods/goddesses. called the twelve uranides.
Cronus: the god of destructive time--time which devours all.
Oceanus: god of the earth-encircling, fresh-water river Oceanus
Lapetus: god of mortality and the allotment of the mortal life-span
Hyperion: god of light, and of the cycles of time measured by the lights of heaven -- the sun, the moon and the dawn.
Crius: god of the heavenly constellations and the measure of the year.
Coeus: god of the intellect. He was also known as Polus (the pole) and probably presided over the axis of heaven in the north around which the constellations revolve.
Rhea: The Queen of the Titans and goddess of female fertility and the mountain wilds.
Tethys: goddess of the sources of fresh-water. She was known as the great nurse ("tethis") of life, and was sometimes equated with Thesis, the goddess "creation." Tethys spawned the Rivers, Clouds and Springs.
Theia: goddess of sight and the shining light of heaven ("aither")
Phoebe: goddess of intellect and prophetic goddess of the great Oracle of Delphi.
Themis: goddess of the natural order, divine law and tradition. She was also a goddess of the oracles of Dodona and Delphi.
Mnemosyne: goddess of memory, words and language. She was the mother of the nine Muses by Zeus.
the myth goes that Hyperion, Coeus, crius and Lapetus held the four corners of the sky while Cronus castrated their father uranus.

I'd love to hear more thoughts on that crossover.
YES OMG!!!
(this is abt my pjo/bsd crossover btw!)
so a little worldbuilding: atsushi was still an orphan obvi, and they're all like 12-18? so like atsushi would be like 14? dazai/kunikida/ranpo/etc would be like 18? or maybe ranpo would be like 20 but still at chb idk. the pm might be camp jupiter? also all the pjo characters still exist in this universe so none of the bsd guys are like the main characters
so i think atsushi would be a dionysus or apollo kid. dionysus cause tigers and apollo cause idk the vibes.
ummmm i said that kunikida would be an athena or zeus kid, athena cause brains and zeus cause honestly i feel like it just fits yk?
the tanazaki's would be like dionysus kids
yosano would be an apollo or thanatos kid. cause healing but like healing with death?
and poor like 10 year old kyouka is an athena kid
kenji is a demeter kid
fukuzawa is like a... fuck wait this is difficult. he's a hermes kid maybe? trust me the vibes are there
more below the cut cause i'm gonna talk A LOT
NOW WE'RE ONTO DAZAI! this bitch was really hard to categorise actually cause like you have to give him something in line with his character arcs? so my first thought was apollo, cause idk but it didn't really fit. my second idea was aphrodite AND HEAR ME OUT ON THIS ONE. so like he'd see people as not really caring about him cause he'd feel like he made them? and he'd have charmspeak. also him being an aphrodite kid just feels right when i think about the fifteen scene. he could also be a hades kid with a nico-esqe time travel lotus casino type of shitshow and like oda was his brother figure maybe? idk i feel like he'd be an aphrodite kid and i refuse to elaborate. (he could be a venus kid cause port mafia?)
ranpo is just mortal and can see through the mist, maybe he's an oracle maybe he's not.
LETS GO TO THE PM!
chuuya could be from another pantheon? maybe? idk he's an ares/mars kid or maybe like a thanatos kid? or he got like cursed/bestowed with like being a demigod but like he doesn't have a proper godly parent? but like he has a patron god parent? so like maybe a titan? like hyperion or smth? or atlas? idk
mori is like a legacy of asclepius and kouyou is an ares/mars kid 100%
the akutagawa's are related on the mortal side and ryuu is a luna (selene) kid? gin is like possibly a very distant legacy of like ultios (assassins!)?
higuchi is like a nymph or driad or smth like that.
kaiji is a minerva or vulcan kid
ummm hirotsu is like a legacy of zeus. very distantly tho
i probably forgot someone from the mafia but whatever
i'd say the hunting dogs are all mortal but can see through the mist (or sense, in jouno's case)
ummmm lets see
other relevant characters:
i want the guild to be a different pantheon so they're the norse ppl. or like 50/50 mortals
POE IS NOT DEAD BTW HE'S NOT IN VALHALLA! poe is like an odin kid maybe? or he's just completely normal? idk he needs powers but yeah he can defs see through the veil/mist and like do shit with it
uhhh oda was themis kid or legacy.
ango's an athena kid? maybe?
OH SHIT THE DOA!!!
i think the decay of angels is like people from a lot of different pantheons with similar goals.
fyodor i think should be from the slavic mythological pantheon so now i get to read about more myths!!! this is obviously very loose cause there isn't much known about slavic myths and gods (cause the christian colonisers didn't care enough to write anything about them) but i feel like he's a dola kid. dola is the personification of destiny and fate! fyodor could also just be completely normal
nikolai is a normal mortal dude who can like see myth-y stuff but he can also do legit magic? like i feel like it would come from the "soul" or smth instead of godly genes? idk like he got gifted with magic cause like a god took pity on him or smth?
AND SIGMA!!! MY CHILD!!! he's a weird one cause like he spawned out of a book. i'd say maybe he's a reincarnated soul? idk tho
lmao there was no worldbuilding here but whatever
#fandom crossover#bungou stray dogs#riordanverse#percy jackson#etc#if anyone wants to talk to me about this more feel free to

Gaia
Gaia (also Gaea or Ge) is a primordial goddess and the personification of the Earth in Greek mythology. Gaia emerged from Chaos and is considered the supreme or mother goddess by immortals and mortals alike. All gods and goddesses are descended from her through her union with Uranus (Heaven) and Pontus (Sea). Her Roman equivalent is Terra Mater or Tellus Mater.
Gaia was the first overseer at the Oracle of Delphi and sometimes warned others of prophecies she had received. She helped Zeus overthrow his father, Cronus, and defeat the Titans. However, she soon turned against Zeus and sent her monstrous son, Typhon, after him.
Mother Goddess
According to Hesiod (c. 700 BCE) in his Theogony, Gaia emerged from Chaos (the great void) and gave birth to Uranus (Heaven), Ourea (Mountains), and Pontus (Sea). She married her son Uranus, and together they had the 12 Titans (Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Tethys, and Cronus). Gaia also bore the three one-eyed Cyclopes (Brontes, Arges, and Steropes) and the three Hecatoncheires, the hundred-handed and fifty-headed Giants (Kottos, Gyes, and Briareus).
With Pontus, Gaia gave birth to the sea gods and goddesses Thaumas, Phorcys, Ceto, and Eurybia. All the notable gods and goddesses are descended from Gaia, and she is viewed as a mother or supreme goddess.
